This five-day trek from Spituk to Matho is relatively easy and it offers great scenic landscapes and beautiful panorama from the Stok La. It passes through the Hemis National Park so there is a high chance of spotting wild animals.

Day 1: Spituk - Zingchen


Time: 5 hrs
Distance: 15.7 km
Elevation gain / loss: +375m / -161m


- visit Spituk monastery before the trek
- walk along the Indus river before entering the gorge that leads to Zingchen
- you can also choose to go from Spituk to Zingchen by jeep

Day 2: Zingchen - Rumbak


Time: 3-4 hrs
Distance: 6.5 km
Elevation gain / loss: +555m / -0m


- enter the Hemis National Park and follow the valley leading to Rumbak village
- homestay possibility in Rumbak

Day 3: Rumbak - Stok La - Mankarmo


Time: 6-7 hrs
Distance: 10.7 km
Elevation gain / loss: +1106m / -682m


- cross the Stok La, the trail becomes steeper as you get closer to the pass
- enjoy the fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and Indus valley from the pass
- the descent is quite steep, follow the trail until you reach the shepherd settlement at Mankarmo

Day 4: Mankarmo - Matho La - Gangpoche


Time: 4 hrs
Distance: 8.0 km
Elevation gain / loss: +464m / -416m


- ascend gradually to the Matho La and enjoy the great view of Stok Kangri from the pass
- walk down towards Gangpoche

Day 5: Gangpoche - Matho


Time: 3-4 hrs
Distance: 10.8 km
Elevation gain / loss: +0m / -902m


- walk through a beautiful gorge to reach Matho village
- possibility to visit Matho monastery

Getting to / from the trek


- it takes 20 minutes to drive from Leh to Spituk (10 km)
- it takes 40 minutes to drive from Matho to Leh (25 km)
