Mountaineering in Ladakh

There are many spectacular mountaineering expedition options in Ladakh. Listed below are some of the favorite and famous peaks above 6000m.

Stok Kangri (6153m)

Stok Kangri is closed in 2020 and 2021. This measure has been taken in order to protect the glacier which is the main source of water for Stok village.

Stok Kangri is a relatively “easy” 6000m+ peak, perfect for a first mountaineering experience in the Himalayas. This majestic mountain offers beautiful views of the Karakoram and Zanskar ranges. The climb does not require special mountaineering skills, it can be done in 4 days if you are already well acclimatized. For a better acclimatization, you could start the expedition from Spituk or Chilling or combine the climb with the Markha valley trek.

Kang Yatse I (6400m) & II (6200m)

The mountain has two main summits. The lower western peak, Kang Yatse II, does not require special mountaineering skills. The higher eastern peak, Kang Yatse I, should only be undertaken by experienced climbers as it is across a technically difficult knife-edge traverse. The Kang Yatse climb can be combined with the Markha valley trek from Spituk or from Chilling.

Mentok Kangri (6250m)

Situated on the western side of the vast Tso Moriri lake, this peak can be climbed in 3-4 days from Korzok village. From the summit, there are fantastic views of the Chamser & Lungser Kangri across the lake, the Changthang plateau and distant Tibet. For a good acclimatization, the best is to combine the climb with the Rumtse to Tso Moriri trek, the Hemis to Tso Moriri trek or the Zanskar to Tso Moriri trek.

Chamser Kangri (6620m) & Lungser Kangri (6666m)

Rising up from the eastern shores of Tso Moriri, Chamser and Lungser Kangri are perfect objectives for amateur climbers who want to get above 6500m. The expedition can be done in 5-7 days from Korzok village. The main challenge is the altitude so one must be well acclimatized before attempting the ascent. Same as for Mentok Kangri, the best is to combine the climb with the trek from Rumtse to Tso Moriri trek, the Hemis to Tso Moriri trek or the Zanskar to Tso Moriri trek.
